The White Tiger by Avarind Adiga is a satire on the reality of India and the life of the people who live there. The author’s intent is to illustrate the darker side to India that is not part of the original Western idea of India. Issues such as corruption in government and the police and sexual violence are highlighted in this novel. Although this work is realistic fiction the issues presented in this novel are relevant and are present in India today. Newspapers such as the Guardian and the New York Times cover the issues of violence, corruption, and poverty which is present in India. Therefore to break out of the perpetual cycle of poverty and injustice violence and corrupt means are used. Police brutality and corruption is illustrated in Avarind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger. In The White Tiger the narrator displays the face of the true India in stories of rigged elections, police brutality and sexual violence. Avarind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger is an attempt to unmask the real India. The perception of India and the realistic India are two very different concepts. India, like many countries has corrupt government officials and police brutality. In this novel the narrator describes the police beating down a man because he was going to vote for himself â€Å"Vijay and a policeman had knocked the rickshaw-puller down, and they had begun beating him; they hit him with their sticks, and when he thrashed at them they kicked him† (Adiga 85).
